April 21st, Aureate, Aurelian, Auric, Aurous…All Things Gold

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

OK submissions for the Werner Golden Strokes Contest are over. Feel free to continue to send in those golden moments throughout the season as we love to see them, but this years contest has capped it’s submissions.

Now we will perform a golden dump the next few days and put up all the photos and video. Then next week we will go live with online voting/judge in a head to head battle of the sweet 16 photos and vids. Essentially we will put the entries in a bracket tourney format and through single elimination battle it out until we find a champ. Good luck everyone and now, gold.

What up LVM!

This is a pretty cool sequence shot of me on sunshine, taken and edited by Rob Hurst about two years ago. Pretty sweet angle and lighting with the fish eye lens. Mr. Hurst does good work!

Peace,

Ryan DeKay

Let the gold shine down.

Hey,

Picture is of John Trembly and I squirting Fayette Station on the New in WV at 22,500 cfs. this was our second lap on this rapid after squirt the lower new that day. Hand paddling the new in a squirt boat with that much flow was out of control! but so sick! we were hitting rides in our creeking vests up to 30 seconds! Anyways in this photo we decided to do it with no pfd.

Taylor Martin

Oh oh some unique gold.

Hey guys,
first picture is me on West Cherry Creek taken by the Taft Sibley. Second photo was taken when I was ball’n as a child. thought it would be a good picture since i had a gold shirt on.

Thanks,

Taylor Martin

Twice the squirt taken at halls of karma by Jon Shannon. Picture is of Steve O’keefe and I playing in the seams in the eddy. the second picture was Taken of me at Fishing with Ghandi on Tremont last fall. Hands down the best spot in Tennessee. Sorry Cowbell you’re second now.

And finally for the day a combo entry of video and photos by former Russian President Dave Gorbachev.

Hey LVM,

Was just checkin out the contest, and thought I would turn up the heat and include some new stuff to my entry. These Golden Strokes are courtesy of Joshua Wall on a recent trip to the Raven’s Fork in Cherokee, NC. Southeast is where it’s at!!

First two shots are of myself dropping in to Mike Tyson’s Punchout. Third is myself at Caveman- aka the best boof in the southeast!

Enjoy,

Dave

p.s. real last name is (Ledford). I just made the Gorbachev thing up for yahoo. thanks guys

April 4-20 Afghani Gold, Last Day to Submit

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

Today is the last day for submissions…get to work. Now gold.
First we have a golden shower submitted by Ryan Allen.

Here is a old photo of my golden stroke taken by Brent Meadows (photo 103)
and also a newer photo of a subterrainian gc photo taken by Nick Murphy

Taste It!,

very nice

ohhh yes, golden nastyness, aaahhhhhhh

one more of Jeremy Pou golden stroking this first D.

You may say why has noone run this little 8′ drop before? It is due to most of the water then drops 25′ into an underground jumble of rocks with only a sliver of water leading into the next drop ( which has been run) that goes into a sweet boof to slide.

gold gold gold gold gold

Now for a little Gold outside of the lower 48.

Here’s a set from a few places I’ve been recently.

first photo (file name ‘dan’) is Dan Dixon paddling his Pirouette on the Piatua river in Ecuador

second one (Diego) is Diego Robles also on the Piatua

Third we have JD Batove on the Upper Willow in Alaska doing a race for daylight run, we took off the river around midnight.

Last is Zach Stipe on the put-in falls of the Hollin river in Ecuador, a 2 day class IV remote jungle run.

Thanks,

Brandon Gonski

Next a pile of photos by Mark Taylor. Gold.

I really want to stop having to borrow paddles so I’m gonna just keep sending them your way. First sequence is me dropping Big Boy. Next up is Josh Wall firing through mortal combat. Second sequence is what happens when you catch an edge trying to wheel groove tube. I would call it a golden-brown stroke because you’re like “oh crap but then something cool comes out of a mistake and you don’t eat rocks at the bottom. Not intentional but cool nonetheless. Both photo sequences by Josh Wall and Mortal Combat by me.

Good Lines,

Mark

Once again we will finish with a little video. Not sure if this has anything to do with golden stroking, but enjoy none the less. Thanks Weaver for the video and until tomorrow happy 4-20.

Hey guys,

Here’s a couple of shots from last year’s Beaver River festival here in NY, taken at Moshier Falls; what a shame that it only runs one weekend a year… Anyways, the first shot is of one of the Fluid boys Seth Chappelle, and the second is of my buddy Chris Burnham with the eye of the tiger on his first time down the falls.

Enjoy,

Moving on….

Hey LVM,

I’m taking a Black & White Photo class right now and I’ve been taking my camera out on river lately and snagged some Northwoods Golden Strokes on the Black River in Michigan’s Upper Penensula. They’re all 35mm shots that I printed and scanned onto the computer. The first one is Brian Krueger dropping Sandstone Falls, and the second is a little C-1 action with John LaGow running Jills Delight.

Rodney Claiborne

Looks like you are learning something in your class...likey.

Another proud stroke of black and white gold.

Finally we have a sweet little video that in our opinion sums up what kayaking is all about. Enjoy this piece sent in by Matt Porter and remember tomorrow is the final day for submissions. peace LVM.

Hey LVM,

Just wanted to share this film with everyone. Filmed during the last weekend of the Tallulah releases…I’ve seen some pretty cool shots this year and just wanted to give respect to all the films thus far. I hope everyone enjoys this…and as always thank you to the crew at LVM for continuing to inspire…

Golden Auriferous Effervescent Friday The 16th

Friday, April 16th, 2010

It is Friday and I know everyone is ready to ride this weekend, so with no further delay…gold.

Hey guys,

These contests are sick, what a way to bring people out of the woodwork and share all their sweet shots…anyways, here are a few I have.

The first is Ben Guttridge on Toaster Falls on the New Haven Ledges in VT in the orange Fluid Solo, while recent Beatdown winner, Danny Sigers watches from below.

The next is myself in the blue boat, stroking through the Playpen on the same river.

And finally, Chris Morelli post gold-stroke dropping in from the last drop on the Eagle section of the Beaver River in NY.

Hope you like ‘em,
Eric Adsit

Hey Guys,

I took this photo of my buddy Zac Crouse paddling the Bass river in Nova Scotia, by the looks of his boat and helmet he could use some new gear haha! Anyway the coolest thing about this photo is his paddle blade, check out how flexed it is! That boy works hard for his boofs.

I can send a higher res version if you’d like it. Thought of this photo when I saw your contest.

Kelsey Thompson

Great shot Kelsey!, that is some high power golden flurry of goodness. Good weekend to everyone!

Gold Morning Everyone…It’s The 15th of April

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

We like video here at LVM so let’s start off with a golden submission by Mark Zakutansky.

Hey hey!!! Up here in the Poconos of Pennsylvania… the land of the Delaware Water Gap (Raymonskill and Hornbecks) and steep creeking galore… we have an EPIC spring with the entire month of March showing good flows all across the board.

The video link above is Dave Meister of Danville, PA running the 30 footer on the rarely run Stony Creek, which is a steep creeking tributary to the Lehigh River. Its sees very little traffic and this local gem drops 600 total feet of elevation in just under 2 miles.

The video is by myself, Mark Zakutansky (C1).

You can download it off vimeo if you are so inclined. Here’s a picture of the same drop, C1 style, just before sticking a huge boof…http://picasaweb.google.com/mzakutan/StonyCreekLehighTrib3142010#5449985242541906514

Thanks and keep up the great work down there, we’ll keep merking it up here in the Poconos, rain dependent.

Peace,

Mark Z.

3/14/2010 Lehigh Tributary

Next up is Mark Taylor…

Hey guys,

Hope there’s been lots of great paddling for yall. Figured I would send in a few pictures for the contest. If any of yall know me, I have not been having great luck with paddles lately and am not much of a handpaddler. Being a college student is fun but having no money gets kinda old. Hope these are worthy. Thanks and enjoy this great weather on the river. Thanks to all that took pictures. Show some love to a needy kayaker fellow boaters!

In order: anaconda, Duane Gibson trying to keep his head on his neck, gorilla, notch, j wall stylin go left, basking in the sun, stateline, pencil sharpener

Good lines to all,

Mark

The snake and the raven.

Duane...keep those arms in.

pretty pretty pretty

Haven't seen this angle before...nice!

The Green Race is fun!

Finally a female entry! Looking good Nikki, but next time send an image that is at least 500 pixels wide.

Amos Ivey took this picture of me last summer boofing the middle line of Rewind on the Watauga. Amos has taken some amazing pictures over the years but this is one of my favorites. You can clearly see the last stroke taken to launch this boof and make a clean landing. I love how the water is falling away from the blade of the paddle and the boat seems to be completely out of the water. Thanks Amos!

-Nikki Malatin

OK that is all the eye candy for today. Check back in tomorrow as Eric Adist throws us some really unique gold!

Gold Gold Gold And More Gold

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

We’ll start off with a video of super fun, super fly, super when it’s not dry, Overflow Creek Georgia.

Hey LVM Fam! I couldn’t remember if there’s been a Golden Hand Paddle Stroke on there yet (I’m sure Keith’s got ‘em stacked up waitin’ to unleash ‘em though) and was lookin’ over some footage. This was from yet another fun filled day on the Georgia gem Overflow Creek. Here’s a little background to set up the clip. I’m usually a hand paddler when it comes to Class V, because my roll with a stick can be flakey under pressure. Well on this day I talked my buddy Greg Watson into droppin’ his paddle and hand paddlin’ with me. I ran Marginal Monster way better than I did my first time (melted down-super deep), but did not strike Gold like Watson did. Here ya go!

Here is a fine set of photos sent in by the ever talented Rob Hurst.

Heres a shot of Jeff Snyder getting golden on his feet off of Ohiopyle Falls during the Over the Falls Festival.

More to come…

Rob

The elusive stand-up golden stroke.

Mike Moore at Iron Ring being innovative

Evan Ross getting very golden on the Embudo

The extremely elusive triple stroke. First boater is Raphael Theibaut (sp?) and the last boater i think is Shane Benedict. Not sure of the middle boater. This is from the 06 Green Race. Back when there were only two greenboats in existence.

Hola LVM,

Hello, I hope this email finds you all well. I have dug through this season’s strokes and I believe there may be one or two worthy of the nomination for GOLDEN STROKE (angels singing AHHHHHHHHHHH).

Sunshines in the Gold of the moment

These shots were taken by Mike Thurber of Zak Sears. The first is on the Rio Fuy in Chile during some 2009 Christmas day golden stroking, and the second is on the infamous Rio Palguin. Worthy of gold for sure.

April Trece Werner Golden Strokes

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

Here we are almost halfway through the month and the photos and video are still coming in. Boom right back into the gold from Michael Toth.

LVM,

Please break out the “I can’t believe it’s not butter spray” and start enjoying this golden stroke.

Spray the butter!

I’m still on the couch after a shoulder dislocation, so with no kayaking in sight for the moment, this seemed like the next best thing.

The first one is Leif Ellsworth about to boof the dog crap out of Dim Sum on Thunder Creek in Washington St. The rest of the run was a wood-choked, high water disaster, but this rapid was amazing.

The next two are different angles on a drop of the North Fork of the Jocko in Montana.

Thanks,

Nick Ianniello

Hey Guys! I want to submit a few shots into the contest. The first shot is of me running the bottom slide of Toxaway Falls this spring and was taken by Jae Ellison. The second two were taken by Caylin Edwards on the Rio Alseseca back in February on a Girls at Play trip. They were taken the same day Will, Dooley, Eli and the boys at Esprit were shooting footage for the Canoe Movie. Good times, good times!

Thanks!
